Racial Justice: Equality California
This film was made during the summer of racial uprisings in the United States, amid the Trump administration and the COVID-19 pandemic. It features Valecia Phillips, a native New Yorker and Director of Finance and Administration at Equality California, as she reflects on how she responded to the protests following the murder of George Floyd in Minnesota and the urgent need to center Black lives in public discourse.
Phillips also speaks to her broader commitment to cultural and civic engagement, shaped in part through her volunteer work as a public radio producer. Her work has focused on amplifying the voices of women, LGBTQ+ communities, and allies, helping bring these perspectives into institutions of influence across California and the United States.
Valecia's personal story makes visible the layered realities of Black queer life in America, cutting through abstraction and statistics to create direct emotional understanding. Sharing it across various forums has fostered recognition among diverse audiences.
MinxFilms has made 26 films for Equality California.
